The results of the first day's matchups:
(7) Nine Inch Nails defeated (10) Wilco 46-31
(5) Swans defeated (12) Pet Shop Boys 31-18
(1) Cure whooped (16) Gear Daddies 50-10
(2) Radiohead edged (15) Liz Phair 40-35
What we learned: all the higher seeds move on, so no surprises here (ha ha Radiohead joke). The net results are the aggregate of two different polls: one via @angermonsoon's twitter and one at the bottom of the blog posts. This is because while we were originally planning on only using the twitter polls, it turns out that you can't vote there unless you're a twitter user, so we thought it best to open up a second poll. In one case, this had a strange outcome: the twitter results of the Radiohead/Liz Phair matchup were overwhelmingly (2-1) in favor of Liz Phair. The blog results favored Radiohead by almost the same margin. Not sure what to make of that. It's possible, for instance, that those taking the Twitter polls aren't actually reading the descriptions or listening to the songs, and are acting on memory or reputation only. Or possibly more Twitter users prefer Liz Phair to Radiohead (or prefer "Fuck and Run" to "Fake Plastic Trees"). This is not, obviously, enough of a sample size to make any real generalizations, but still fun to track. We'll keep an eye on the data going forward and report back to you.
Great action on the first day, though. We heard from several people who had votes swayed by some of the comments, so keep those coming. That's where the real action is, in the stands (perhaps the peanut gallery: weird phrase holdover from the days of vaudeville when those in the cheap seats often shrieked and chucked stuff at the stage). Keep your eye on today's games.
Results are as I expected. I missed the voting window yesterday, which spared me from the agonizing Liz Phair vs. Radiohead decision. I'm not surprised at the outcome, though.
